One on one coaching . . . .
|
"We must not, in trying to think about how we can make
a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we
can make which,
over time, add up to big differences
that we often
cannot foresee." -Marion Wright Edelman
Each person is an individual and so your coaching program will be custom designed for you. There is work involved in meeting the outcomes you desire. This work will be challenging because it involves a new way of viewing yourself, your situation, and others. However, clients have found that the outcome of the coaching far exceeds their expectations.
Each coaching program is different but the coaching process typically includes the components described below.
First, I complete an initial assessment. This usually consists of a 1 to 2 hour meeting though sometimes two sessions may be required. During this meeting we will discuss what you would like to be coached on, why it is important to you, and what you expect to get out of coaching. In some cases, you may be asked to complete pre-work to assist with the initial assessment. During the assessment, no "coaching" will be done. Instead, I will gather information to obtain the most complete understanding of you and your intended outcome.
For business professionals, established feedback tools such as Myers Briggs Assessment or 360 Feedback Surveys may be recommended as part of the coaching program.
Based on the information you provide, I will draft a coaching program and together we will ensure you are aligned with the outcomes of the program. The coaching program will usually include the following components:
- Purpose - Why do the coaching at all? What do you expect to gain?
- Outcomes - What are the specific skills, competencies, behaviors which will be developed?
- Coaching Structure - What is the frequency and duration of the program?
- Coaching Program - What actions need to take place to meet the coaching purpose and outcomes?
The coaching program itself will vary widely as it is uniquely designed for the client. However, the coaching program components may include one or more of the following:
- Self observation exercises - regular check-ins with oneself to observe behaviors and feelings
- Self reflection - may be in the form of journaling or conversation with others
- Exercises - specific projects or tasks to be completed such as written goals, visions, plans, to dos, etc.
- Self assessment - may involve the use of common tools such as Myers Briggs, Enneagram, etc.
- External Feedback - feedback from colleagues, friends, or family
It is important to note that the coaching program is not complete without feedback from the client. The client's buy in to the coaching program is critical - without it, the coaching just won't work!
Now the work begins. Coaching will occur in person and/or by phone depending on each client's situation. Sustainable change takes time to achieve. This is why a typical program lasts 6 to 12 months. Coaching frequency will be at least every other week though once a week to begin may be recommended. In addition, I offer regular check-ins by email or by phone.
Midway through the program we will have a check-in to re-assess the program purpose and to determine whether the initial outcomes are still appropriate. As the coaching unfolds, it is common for the client's intention to shift or to become clearer. If the purpose of coaching shifts, the program will be modified.
